Sanyo PLC-XM100 LCD Projector Repair | No Power | Bad Fans
Another older high lumen Sanyo with a power supply failure. The two capacitors near the switching regulator were bad on both the VCC to the switching IC and the 5V standby. After repairing the power supply, I found that one or more of the six fans in the air intake was bad. I had a scrap chassis from a Panasonic version of this chassis (a lot of models are similar, using different optics/electronics) that became a parts donor. Part of me wonders if the fan contributed to the capacitor failure but more likely it's just another high mileage part that needed changing.

Sony VPL-HW45ES SXRD Video Projector HDMI Repair
Просмотров 7435 месяцев назад
I picked this up on eBay for a decent price. I was using an HW40ES but you know...45ES is better so I replaced the 40 with this. It's been a few months since I recorded this and the 45ES is fantastic. The HDMI ports had failed. This seems to be a common failure point in this series. I'm not sure if it's a design thing or just that HDMI is delicate to begin with. Either way, it used to require a...

    Hi! I recently replaced a broken chip in my projector (Acer X1320WH model) and I'm not sure about the placement of the big fan(s) next to the lamp (so not the small one that was cleaned in this video). Should they pull air away from the lamp and towards the outside, or towards the lamp and into the projector? Here it seems like the big fan is pointing towards the outside, given the arrow sticker we see on top of it. Is that true for my projector as well? Last time I turned it on, it smelled bad, like maybe it was overheating.....

    Hi frank not sure if you can help but my benq tk800 is driving me crazy. I keep sending my projector away to be fixed but a month after getting it back same problem. It overheats and turns off after about 20mins. I changed the lamp but same issue as with the original. And BTW the lamp body is insanely hot!!! Not sure if that's normal. Everything inside is super clean. Also I am not sure if it matters but I have no plastic membrane over the lamp, maybe when they previously repaired it, they forgot to replace it? Also I can I only see two fans when I open it. The one to the right of the body near the back blows inwards and the one next to the lamp blows outwards. Is that correct.. Help please and thank you very much for your great videos. Any advise appreciated. I'm in Spain BTW

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank 18 часов назад

      Sounds like the exhaust fan is backward. The exhaust fan should blow out. The turbine fan blows into the lamp and then the exhaust fan blows that hot air out. If the exhaust fan is reversed, it will prevent the hot air from getting out and I would guess it would finally overheat in 20-30 min. It's also really easy to put that fan back in the wrong way. There is an arrow on it that should be pointing out. You can check the temps in the service menu. press menu then enter/source at the same time. use the arrow keys to navigate the boxes. One of the boxes shows the temp and fan speeds. just dont change anything. You can ruin it really easily with one wrong setting. I might be wrong but I kind of recall the Inlet fan being the only one that blows inward. I am fairly sure the rest blow out. imgur.com/a/nyIzDBU <--fan diagram

    This unit was really bad about blowing output transistors. I have one stored that I would like to repair. It does not like to be run at its full rated output (not even close) and it also does not like difficult loads. As long as you don't rock out too hard, it is ok. A good friend gave this to me after the third failure. It has been packed away a long time, but I do have the service manual. May start to look for output transistors, even if I settle for after market.

    Thanks for the video! My Hd142x has a 4 month old bulb from projectorlampsusa and recently it started making buzzing noises. Now when turned on, it makes a loud static buzz, the bulb flickers and then shuts off. I disassembled and cleaned everything but still same issue. I've heard it could be the ballast board? Is that the entire power supply board? I've also inquired on the bulb warranty. Any advise would be much appreciated!

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank День назад

      color flicker or light to dark flicker? How does the color wheel check out? I would check my color wheel videos first. If you have any lamp ignition the ballast is not likely bad. you want to do some more troubleshooting instead of loading the "parts cannon". If its just a color wheel, you're talking like $40-50. If its the ballast(I doubt) then its much much more. confirm the issue and solution first instead of just throwing parts at it due to what someone else said. Even me! I would be verifying the color wheel first. Those are very common failures. Ballasts dont really fail unless something damages them like a cheap amazon lamp.

    • @joscarlang
      @joscarlang 2 часа назад

      Hi frank! Thanks for the reply! It makes a short burst of what I'd call loud white noise while the bulb fires. The bulb illuminates only briefly during the noise... Maybe half a second then cuts out. I checked out the color wheel last night and it's dirty but the sticker is there and it spins freely. The unit does the 3 spin cycles then shuts off. (cooling fan works too). I bought replacement color wheel and will install in a couple of days and report back. Cheers

      Actually I do have a suggestion. At 10:16 I show the main side of the board and there is a small white fuse in the left hand side under the socket to the left of the relay(black box). That fuse may have popped from a power surge. It would need to be desoldered and resoldered, but that should do it. You may want to just check the fuse with an ohm meter first. If the fuse is open(very high resistance) then replace it, but if the fuse measures closed(low resistance like 1-0 ohms) then it might something in the power supply(circuit in the bottom left corner). I'd look for bloated or popped capacitors(The can things). if it's none of those, it might be terminal and time to replace it.

    Hello Frank - I don't know if you are still monitoring your RUclips Channel. I tried following your steps in troubleshooting a BenQ 1080ST projector. A few weeks ago my lamp blew up (literally). I bought a replacement lamp, an Osram OEM lamp but the lamp would not turn on. I followed your troubleshooting steps on RUclips, and I don’t get the voltage readings that you get but I am not sure where the problem is. I measures the lamp and I get infinite resistivity so the lamp is good. I measured the color wheel sensor signal (most left pin) and I get a constant reading of 3.55 volts ( the voltage does not drop to 0.4 volts when I turn the projector on). The color wheel is turning. I also measured the voltage at signal to the ballast (4th pin from the right) and when I turn it on it initially reads 4.37 volts, it drops to 2.34 volts and goes back to 3.34volts where it stays (eventually it goes back to 4.38volt) Finally, I also measured the input to the ballast per your video, and I get a constant reading of 152 volts, not 388 volts what you get. So I am not sure what the issue is, can you help?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank 9 дней назад

      Hi, I do monitor. Im still making content, just busy with that whole life thing. Most likely your power factor correction power supply was damaged when the lamp burst. It might have damaged the ballast too. Check the mosfets on the ballast for shorts. If no shorts are found, then I bet its just the PFC supply. As far as what's bad on that end, hard to say. Check the large mosfet on the heatsink, the TVS diode underneath and all of the corresponding parts that create the 380. Thats likely your issue. Be careful of that filter cap. It holds a charge and its very spicy.

      I would not send it to BenQ. $300 is far too much to spend on that . I would contact an e-recycler to get a price on a full power supply. Gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com is who I use. Send them a picture of the power supply(the board that the AC cord goes to). The 1080ST is great but I would set a cap of $200-250 tops for any repairs. 3-400 is just too much. You can sometimes find a used 1080st working for $300-ish.

I used a piece of the black tape that some of the flat electrical bands had and it works perfect. Used little bit of skin tack to make the surface where the tape goes on the wheel just so the tape adheres better and doesn’t fall off. • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank 11 дней назад

      They do wear out. They can have rotation problems or in your case, have a loss of color from the dichroic coating wearing out from heat/IR/UV. They are fairly easy to find. You may need to rebuild the carrier with a bare wheel/motor. You can try the folks I use. Time electronics. gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com also ebay. I would not worry about OEM/aftermarket. This is old enough where OEM wont really be a viable (or cost effective) option and most aftermarket color wheels are perfectly fine. There isn't anything all the special to a color wheel so its not hard to make.

    Hi Frank, your videos were very very helpful for me cleaning out my old BenQ W2000 I sold to a friend that had been running for 8 years without a proper clean (and also with learning how to reach the service menu), and though that projector is now very clean and free of any visual orbs left by when my friend tried to use computer duster on it, when I run the lamp in normal mode (it also ramps up in eco but not as much obviously) it quickly goes from Temp 1 around 403 and LampOut/PwrOut/LampBlw/DMDIn around 2500-2700 (these being the targets as well), to temp 415-418 with fan speeds/targets in the 2700-3000 range. Do you have any idea what might be causing this? I am wondering if it has to do with me repasting the heatsink badly somehow, or a fan or sensor acting up maybe (though fanspeeds look like they're accurate from the readings and fan sound) I haven't torn it down again to check the heatsink, and I'm fairly sure the fans are in the right directions as I went back in and verified those. I have no idea where to find much info on servicing these so your videos have been my only source of information, thanks in advance if you have any tips

    • @FixitFrank

      Make sure the fans are blowing the right way. Some blow in , some blow out. If they are all blowing the same direction that might be the issue. Also check the lamp blower fan(turbine fan) in the center. It kind of sounds like that isnt working right. I suspect you have a fan blowing the wrong direction though from what you are describing.

      I'd probably leave well enough alone. If it's not throwing errors, you stand to cause more problems than you will solve(as there are no problems at the moment). I do understand your reasoning though. I'd say use it and if you see higher temperatures on the light source or DMd, then maybe re-paste them but I would not just do it if its working.

    I have an Epson 5030UBe that worked the day before and then the next day I have the same issue you had with the EPSON screen then grey. No menus come up. Remote and everything works but no menus will come up. So I am thinking I may have a mainboard issue as well. @FixitFrank Where were you able to find a replacement mainboard? I believe I will need to find one for my projector.

      It's not cost effective. I hate to say that. If the board is bad, it's new projector time. This repair cost me $500 of my own money. I basically paid to fix this projector. I lost money on this. Epson makes repair unrealistic and over priced. I'm not a fan of them as you can probably tell.

    8/1/24. Second viewing. Still using my AX-33. Gave you a 👍at the first viewing. Seems like Sony is not as interested in camcorders nowadays. They've been pushing blogging capable pocket sized cameras with video capability. Even called it quits on the AX-700. The new A6700 has tons of new bells and whistles, but getting a decent PZ lens costs as much as the body. I'll continue to stick w/ my 33 if only because BOSS is better than all that in camera stabilization that crops the image.

    I just bought the same projector but its making an odd humming/buzzing noise when the lamp is on. I thought it might be the phosphor wheel fan so I took it apart but now I have a feeling the noise is coming from the phosphor wheel itself... Any advice? Is it possible to replace the wheel or is it even worth it trying? Projector works perfectly, besides the noise. Any suggestions really appreciated!

    Hello, Frank. I own an Optoma DS551 and am trying to bypass the SMPS and ballast. I've monitored the signals from the ballast and tried to replicate them with a microcontroller. Unfortunately, I noticed that the SCI signal from the projector has a specific dialogue that I'm not familiar with. I've read much online, but nothing has clarified it. Could you provide me with a hint?

    Do you happen to know how it limits rotation? (typically to 315 degrees). I see what looks like a pin protruding from the top gear. Maybe that engages into the casing and the casing bears against the pin at the limits.

    hey frank, i recently had to open up my epson and replace the main power board at the very bottom of the case. in my epson, there were 3 different flat ribbon connectors being used. i was only familiar with the most common one where you slide part of it back to unlock it. the second type i encountered I didn't figure out until I took some up-close pictures of it and noticed it said "Push" on it. Sure enough, when you press on it, it unlocks the mechanism that locks the cable in place. The last ribbon connector in use was for the 3 video connector cables. This one I got really lucky when messing around with it and it unlatched. It is a hinge type that unlocks when flipped up.

      @FixitFrank Месяц назад

      Unfortunately I don't really have free time to give offline advice. The videos are the way I do that. I do have a few tips I can leave here. If the mains supply is dead, you will probably need the 2 ICs(8 pin that drives the PFC) and the 14 pin. Plus you'll need to find which of the surface mount caps went bad to kill the chips. These are kind of a pain because they are using multiple switching drivers instead of just one. If you just want to replace the power supply, they are available for around $300. If you can find the service manual or schematic for gthe power supply that would be idea. but I can't seem to find a manual. gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com is who has the replacement supply if you end up needing one.

      I am not sure honestly. I look at the required power rating on the old ballast and then try a few that have close or identical power ratings. I'm sure there is a more scientific method, but trying them one by one has worked okay for me.
